Leadership requires working in the trenches to elevate those around you. Charlotteans have been working with youth in underserved communities long before an upward economic mobility study which ranked Charlotte 50th out of 50 major U.S. cities. Such members of the community include Chris Dennis, CEO and president of Community Dream Builders, a nonprofit designed to engage and elevate children in communities at risk of social, economic, educational and health outcomes. “The challenge that we face in all communities that are in transition, or changing, is the same,” Dennis said. “We have youth that are tagged on a daily basis by stress that I think my generation and the generation before me didn’t have to face, because we had a lot more engagement.”
